Halong Bay is one of the great tourist attractions in Vietnam. The Bay has over 3000 magnificent islands. The jumping off place for a visit to Halong Bay is Halong City. The traffic around the port is quite horrendous and if you are not on a booked tour you'll probably find it challenging to find a suitable boat. Halong City harbor is full of many boats of different sizes. We booked on a tour where the maximum number of passengers did not exceed 20 people. On a previous visit to Vietnam Lorraine choose another tour where the boat was dangerously crowded. Our houseboat was very comfortable and the service excellent.
